The Call of Cute-thulu
So my brother had a little pet project that he called Project Cthulu, and upon sight of Fudge's Friend the Octopus, was struck by the need to have a fuzzy friend of his own in the form of a project mascot.
Cue a quick browse of Etsy for a suitable crochet pattern (NotYourMommasArtwork's Baby Cthulu, found here), and a hunt online for a pair of suitable greens in a velvet or chenille yarn (Lovecraft.com's Paintbox Chenille in Peppermint and Leaf green, see here).
The pattern was a breeze to follow, it uses mostly single crochet and chains and the occasional half-double crochet - but the HDC is only for the wings if I remember right. The pattern was clearly written, the pieces turned out well with no faffing about and there were photos to show how the tricky parts were meant to look. Plus, the author added guidance on where exactly to stitch different bits on to get a proportionate look which took some of the sting out of the dreaded 'sew it all together' stage!
The result is soft and plush and my brother was delighted with it! Little Cthulu can't quite sit up on account of where I sewed his legs on so he's currently propped up on the desk where he oversees all work on his namesake Project.
I have a fair bit of leftover yarn from this, not sure whether to make a more realistic octopus or there's a squid pattern on my wishlist... I've not got enough to make a second Cthulu, sadly, otherwise I'd make another! My other wishlist patterns are for fingerless gloves etc., so not the kind of thing half a skein of chenille is good for,
I'll find some use for the greens either way though, if only because they were very nice to work with. The Leaf green in particularly is very soft and rich, I really enjoyed working with it so I'm keen to find a project to use the rest up!
For now though, my crochet WIP has defaulted back to the Blanket That Never Ends (because I don't work on it enough). Here's to more waffle stitch madness!
